Job Responsibilities:

  1. Patent Support: Provide patent support services and resolve patent issues for assigned projects or clients.
  2. FTO/Patentability/Portfolio Search Strategies: Understand project requirements and devise strategies for Freedom-to-Operate (FTO), patentability, and portfolio searches.
  3. Technical and FTO Support for APIs: Perform technical assessments and FTO searches for Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs).
  4. Identify Patent Hurdles: Identify critical patent obstacles, monitor patent timelines, and provide updates on prosecution activities.
  5. Patent & Technology Landscape Searches: Conduct searches and build detailed reports on the patent landscape.
  6. Patent Law Awareness: Stay updated on changes in patent laws and databases that impact responsibilities.
  7. Assist with Cross-Functional Projects: Support managers in resolving patent issues across functional projects.
  8. Knowledge Development: Gain understanding of Abbott’s business and client areas, as well as the laws impacting these areas.
  9. Moderate to Significant Impact: Handle matters that have a moderate to significant impact on business operations.

Skills/Experience Requirements:

Basic Qualifications:

  • Education: Post-graduate or Master's degree in Pharmacy (Medicinal/Pharmaceutical Chemistry).
  • Experience: 5-8 years in an intellectual property (IP) or patent function, specifically within the pharmaceutical industry.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Technical Expertise:
    • Strong knowledge of Medicinal and Organic Chemistry.
    • Experience with substance & reaction searches on STN/SciFinder databases.
    • Expertise in evaluating Reactivity of Substances (ROS) for APIs.
    • Knowledge of XRPD, DSC, TGA interpretation.
  • Pharma Industry Knowledge:
    • Experience working in developed (US/Europe) and emerging markets for API IP assessments.
    • In-depth understanding of pharmaceutical dosage forms and APIs.
  • Patent Expertise:
    • Experience with patent search databases.
    • Knowledge of patent drafting and prosecution.
  • Communication Skills:
    • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Personal Attributes:
    • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and willing to learn new skills.
    • Excellent team member who is committed to collaboration.
