Role Overview

R1 RCM is hiring Medical Coders and Senior Medical Coders – Inpatient (IP) with hands-on expertise in DRG-based inpatient coding. The role involves accurate review and coding of inpatient medical records in compliance with ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS guidelines, while ensuring adherence to PHI, HIPAA, and organizational quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review inpatient medical records and assign accurate ICD-10-CM (Principal and Secondary Diagnoses) and ICD-10-PCS procedure codes.

  • Assign and sequence codes correctly based on clinical documentation and coding guidelines.

  • Accurately assign Present on Admission (POA) indicators.

  • Apply strong knowledge of MS-DRG, APR-DRG, APGs, and medical necessity to support clean claim processing.

  • Adhere strictly to AHA Coding Clinic guidelines and internal quality standards.

  • Initiate physician queries to clarify ambiguous or incomplete documentation when required.

  • Monitor account status regularly, follow up on held accounts, and coordinate with team leads and stakeholders for resolution.

  • Maintain productivity, quality, and turnaround time metrics as per business requirements.


Required Skills & Technical Expertise

  • Strong working knowledge of ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS inpatient coding guidelines.

  • Hands-on experience in Inpatient DRG coding (MS-DRG / APR-DRG) environments.

  • Familiarity with 3M Encoder, Optum, Computer-Assisted Coding (CAC), abstracting tools, and Meditech is an added advantage.

  • Sound understanding of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to respond professionally to client and stakeholder emails.

  • Ability to work independently and adapt to evolving business and process requirements.


Qualifications & Experience

  • Education: Any graduate qualification; Life Sciences graduates preferred.

  • Experience Required:

    • 1 to 7+ years of relevant experience in Inpatient (IP) DRG medical coding.

  • Certification (Mandatory):

    • Active CIC (AAPC) or CCS (AHIMA) certification, valid and verified at the time of joining.
