Job Overview
Abbott is seeking a highly qualified Medical Review Officer to join its Rapid Diagnostics Division within the Toxicology Business Unit. This role is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of workplace drug testing review processes. The Medical Review Officer evaluates drug test results, communicates with donors, laboratories, and pharmacies, and applies clinical judgment to determine final outcomes in accordance with federal regulations and company standards.

This position plays a critical role in workplace safety and regulatory compliance by interpreting drug testing results for Department of Transportation (DOT), federal, and non-DOT programs while maintaining the highest standards of medical review practices.

Key Responsibilities

Medical Review and Compliance
Interpret and verify drug testing results in compliance with Department of Transportation regulations, federal statutes, and organizational procedures. Conduct medical reviews of non-negative or invalid drug test results and determine legitimate medical explanations when applicable.

Clinical Evaluation and Decision Making
Apply physician expertise and Medical Review Officer certification knowledge to determine final drug test outcomes. Ensure all medical decisions align with regulatory requirements and safety standards that impact employment and workplace compliance.

Stakeholder Communication and Collaboration
Communicate directly with donors, laboratories, pharmacies, and healthcare providers to validate drug test findings. Provide guidance and feedback to laboratory and collection site representatives regarding performance and compliance issues. Engage with clients and tested individuals to address case-related concerns.

Process Improvement and Quality Assurance
Collaborate with Workplace Solutions leadership and internal teams to support process improvements and maintain operational excellence. Ensure adherence to quality management policies and maintain audit-ready records.

Regulatory and Documentation Oversight
Review and approve administrative documents, medical records, and prescription documentation. Maintain compliance with evolving federal, state, and occupational health regulations. Consult with federal agencies and provide case-related information as required.

Operational Support
Contribute to departmental objectives, support strategic initiatives, and provide subject matter expertise in medical review services. Perform additional responsibilities as assigned to support organizational goals.

Educational Qualifications

Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) required.
Current Medical Review Officer certification from the American Association of Medical Review Officers (AAMRO) or MRO Certification Council (MROCC) required.
Current license to practice medicine in the United States required.

Experience Requirements

Minimum 5 years of clinical practice experience in occupational health settings.
Strong experience interpreting drug testing results and regulatory requirements.
Demonstrated experience in workplace drug testing programs and medical review processes preferred.
