Role Summary:
As a Principal Machine Learning Engineer, you will serve as Amgen’s senior-most technical expert driving the architecture and scale-up of our ML and generative AI platforms. You'll operate at the nexus of software engineering, AI strategy, and platform design—building core services and infrastructure that enable hundreds of practitioners to deploy, monitor, and optimize ML models securely, efficiently, and at scale.
Key Responsibilities:
Architect and engineer end-to-end ML pipelines using MLOps stacks such as Kubeflow, SageMaker Pipelines, and OpenAI SDK.
Convert experimental code into robust microservices (Docker/Kubernetes) with REST/gRPC/event-driven interfaces.
Develop and maintain full-stack AI applications integrating lightweight UIs, workflow engines, and business logic.
Optimize performance and cloud cost through algorithm selection, model pruning, quantization, and resource tuning.
Design observability frameworks—real-time metrics, drift/bias detection, tracing, and usage analytics.
Enforce responsible AI and security measures: encryption, access controls, explainability, and lineage tracking.
Create reusable components: feature stores, experiment trackers, model registries to enhance platform reusability.
Lead exploratory data analysis and feature ideation for high-dimensional and complex data sets.
Partner closely with data scientists to prototype, scale, and benchmark algorithms, ensuring performance and compliance.
Mentor engineers and serve as a go-to advisor for enterprise AI architecture and scalability decisions.
Must-Have Skills:
6–8 years of experience in AI/ML, data engineering, or enterprise software.
Deep understanding of classical and modern ML: regression, tree ensembles, transformers, CNNs, RNNs, clustering, time-series analysis.
Hands-on expertise with vector databases, RAG pipelines, LangChain, Semantic Kernel, and GenAI tools.
Advanced coding in Python and Java; expertise in Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
Proven ability to scale custom ML services and integrate third-party AI SaaS/PaaS solutions.
Business-oriented mindset with experience modeling TCO, ROI, and trade-offs for executive stakeholders.
Exceptional communication skills—able to distill complex tech concepts into strategic insights.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in the pharma/biotech industry.
Thought-leadership contributions (e.g., blogs, whitepapers, conference talks).
Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or related technical field.
Familiarity with Agile or Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) methodologies.
Certifications in ML/GenAI platforms (e.g., AWS AI, Azure AI Engineer, Google Cloud ML).
Education Requirements:
Master’s Degree: 10–14+ years of relevant experience
Bachelor’s Degree: 12–17+ years of relevant experience
