Position Overview:

The Principal Scientist will play a pivotal role in drug discovery, contributing medicinal chemistry expertise across all phases of drug research, from target identification to non-clinical candidate selection. The position involves leading medicinal chemistry projects, designing and optimizing novel molecules, and managing partnerships with CROs and academic collaborators.


Key Responsibilities:

  1. Drug Discovery Leadership:
    • Lead medicinal chemistry projects from hit finding to non-clinical candidate selection.
    • Design and optimize novel small molecules for efficacy, safety, and DMPK properties.
    • Contribute to new drug target ideation, evaluation, and validation.
  2. Collaboration & Communication:
    • Manage activities with discovery CROs and academic partners.
    • Liaise with internal and external teams, including chemists, biologists, and pharmacologists.
  3. Technical Contributions:
    • Participate in synthesis planning, route scouting, and scale-up activities.
    • Monitor and evaluate scientific literature and patents.
    • Prepare detailed reports, presentations, and proposals.
  4. Strategic Execution:
    • Support project planning to ensure alignment with priorities and timelines.
    • Contribute to achieving project objectives effectively and efficiently.

Required Education, Experience, and Skills:

  • Educational Background:
    • Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a related field.
  • Experience:
    • 5+ years of experience in medicinal chemistry within the pharmaceutical industry.
    • Hands-on experience in discovery phases from hit finding to non-clinical candidate nomination.
    • Expertise in evaluating and validating target ideas.
    • Proven track record of publications, including patent inventorship.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Deep understanding of modern synthetic chemistry and analytical techniques (NMR, chromatography, etc.).
    • Proficiency in using scientific software, databases, and applications.
  • Soft Skills:
    • Strong organizational, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities.
    • Effective communication and presentation skills in Finnish and English.
    • Ability to work under deadlines and manage multiple priorities.
  • Personal Attributes:
    • Self-driven, innovative, and attentive to detail.
    • Able to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams.

Additional Information:

  • Location: Organon R&D Finland operates from facilities in Turku and Oulu.
  • Travel: Approximately 25% travel may be required.
