Position Overview:
WellMed, part of the Optum family, is seeking a Regional Medical Director to join our team in San Antonio, TX. As part of the Optum Care Delivery team, you will play a key role in advancing healthcare delivery through clinical excellence, leadership, and strategic initiatives. This role focuses primarily on administrative and leadership responsibilities, with minimal clinical involvement.

Clinical/Administrative Ratio:

  • 0-10% Clinical

  • 90-100% Administrative/Leadership

Scope of Leadership:

  • Regional scope

  • Manages 2+ Medical Directors

  • May include P&L responsibility


Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and manage the market leadership team to implement key deliverables.

  • Develop and maintain collegial relationships with both employed and contracted physicians.

  • Ensure alignment of processes with the business model and implement market-specific initiatives.

  • Lead quality improvement activities to enhance care delivery and outcomes.

  • Mentor and manage Medical Directors and Associate Medical Directors; conduct annual evaluations.

  • Serve on relevant committees and collaborate with market operations, growth, and provider relations teams.

  • Support physician practice acquisitions and clinic integration efforts.

  • Partner with the Clinical Affordability team on innovative care models.

  • Communicate clinical goals to foster unity and improve performance.

  • Uphold organizational values: relationships, performance, compassion, integrity, innovation, inclusion.

  • Collaborate with market president and operations to meet financial targets.


Required Qualifications:

  • M.D. or D.O. with current board certification in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine (ABMS or ABOS)

  • Active and unrestricted medical license in applicable state(s) or ability to obtain within 4 months

  • Valid DEA license


Preferred Qualifications:

  • MBA or MHA preferred


Experience:

  • 8+ years of clinician leadership/management

  • Experience in a matrixed organization

  • Proven success managing high-performing medical directors

  • 10+ years clinical practice (preferred)

  • Deep understanding of Medicare Advantage and coordinated care models


Skills & Abilities:

  • Willingness to travel regionally

  • Credentialing eligibility

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

  • In-depth knowledge of clinical processes, revenue cycle, compensation models, and managed care concepts

  • Strong data analysis and action plan implementation skills

  • Effective in change management, conflict resolution, and mentorship

  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication

  • Spanish fluency is a plus


Compensation:

  • Salary Range: $343,500 to $516,500 per year (Total Cash Compensation at Target)

  • Actual pay is based on factors such as education, experience, performance metrics, and market conditions

  • Benefits include comprehensive health plans, incentive programs, 401(k) contributions, equity stock options, and more
