Position Summary

The Advisor – Synthetic Chemist will be part of the Peptide Therapeutics Team within Biotechnology Discovery Research at Lilly. This individual will be responsible for identifying, optimizing, evaluating, and advancing biotherapeutic peptides and conjugates from concept through clinical development. The role involves leadership in peptide design, synthesis, conjugation, and characterization, with a focus on optimizing pharmaceutical properties and advancing peptides toward clinical development.

Key Responsibilities

Lead Research and Optimization:

  • Lead research efforts from concept to optimization of therapeutic peptides.

  • Implement SAR strategies to improve peptide leads and conjugates.

  • Utilize peptide synthesis, conformational analysis, molecular modeling, and analytical techniques to characterize biopharmaceutical properties.

Therapeutic Area Focus:

  • Solve issues at the interface of peptide engineering, pharmaceutical developability, formulation, and biology.

  • Lead/co-lead multidisciplinary teams, ensuring effective communication and presentation of research findings.

Leadership and Team Collaboration:

  • Manage projects across cross-functional teams within Biotechnology Discovery Research, Discovery Chemistry, Genetic Medicines, and other departments.

  • Communicate project progress to management and governance committees.

Candidate Development:

  • Focus on therapeutic peptide candidates for clinical trials, ensuring strong pharmaceutical properties and biopharmaceutical characterization.

Education and Experience

  • Ph.D. in Chemical or Biological Sciences, focusing on peptide chemistry or synthetic organic chemistry.

  • 0-5 years of experience in biotechnology/pharmaceutical companies or academia.

Additional Preferences

  • Leadership experience in peptide engineering and advancing biotherapeutics.

  • Experience in multi-molecular conjugation chemistry and using state-of-the-art analytical methods.

  • Expertise in macrocyclic peptides, with experience in library-based screening technologies (e.g., OBOC, solution-phase, AS/MS, mRNA display).

  • Strong knowledge of computational and structural methods in peptide optimization.

  • Understanding of pharmaceutical developability and peptide formulation.

Compensation

  • Anticipated Salary Range: $121,500 – $198,000 annually.
