Experience Required

  • Minimum 1+ year of experience in a relevant medical coding specialty.

  • Specific experience in Facility Surgery Coding or Same Day Surgery coding is required.

Educational Qualification and Certification

  • Mandatory certification: CPC (Certified Professional Coder), CCS (Certified Coding Specialist), or COC (Certified Outpatient Coder).

  • CPC-A certification is not eligible for this role.

Role Overview
Guidehouse is seeking a Coder – Surgery Coding to support outpatient and facility-based surgical coding operations. The role involves reviewing patient information, validating clinical documentation, and assigning accurate medical codes in compliance with coding guidelines and regulatory standards. The position focuses on ensuring coding accuracy, preventing billing denials, and maintaining compliance with reimbursement and regulatory requirements.

This opportunity is ideal for professionals with expertise in surgical coding, healthcare documentation, and medical billing processes who are looking to advance their career in healthcare revenue cycle management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze patient records and convert clinical documentation into accurate medical codes.

  • Assign appropriate codes based on ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II coding standards.

  • Validate documentation to support Same Day Surgery coding based on medical decision-making or time-based criteria.

  • Ensure coding accuracy to prevent billing errors and claim denials.

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of coding guidelines, standards, and certifications.

  • Ensure compliance with reimbursement systems and federal, state, and payer-specific regulations.

  • Apply National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI) edits and CMS guidelines to coding processes.

  • Maintain data accuracy, quality standards, and coding compliance requirements.

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II coding principles.

  • Understanding of reimbursement methodologies and healthcare billing regulations.

  • Knowledge of CMS guidelines and NCCI edits.

  • Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.

  • High attention to detail with strong comprehension and typing abilities.

  • Ability to interpret clinical documentation accurately.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel.

  • Experience with coding software or encoders such as 3M, TruCode, or Optum.

  • Familiarity with Electronic Health Record (EHR) or Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems such as EPIC or Cerner.

  • Knowledge of multiple coding specialties, including Evaluation and Management (E&M) and inpatient or outpatient coding.
