Job Overview

R1 RCM is hiring Medical Coders and Senior Medical Coders – Inpatient (IP DRG) for its Hyderabad delivery center. This role is ideal for certified professionals with hands-on experience in ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding, particularly within MS-DRG and APR-DRG environments. The position plays a critical role in ensuring accurate clinical documentation, regulatory compliance, and optimized reimbursement for healthcare providers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review inpatient medical records in compliance with HIPAA and PHI guidelines

  • Assign accurate ICD-10-CM (Principal and Secondary Diagnoses) and ICD-10-PCS procedure codes

  • Apply correct Present on Admission (POA) indicators

  • Ensure accurate code sequencing based on clinical documentation

  • Apply strong knowledge of MS-DRG, APR-DRG, APGs, and medical necessity guidelines

  • Adhere to official coding guidelines, Coding Clinics, and payer-specific rules

  • Query physicians for documentation clarification when required

  • Track and follow up on accounts placed on hold and coordinate with internal stakeholders

  • Maintain productivity, quality benchmarks, and turnaround time targets

  • Communicate effectively with internal teams and external clients via email and reports


Required Experience

  • 1 to 7+ years of hands-on experience in Inpatient (IP) DRG Medical Coding

  • Experience in hospital-based inpatient coding environments is mandatory


Education & Certification

  • Any Graduate or Postgraduate

  • Active coding certification required:

    • CCS (AHIMA) or

    • CIC (AAPC)

  • Certification must be valid and verified at the time of joining


Required Skills & Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology

  • Proficiency in ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS guidelines

  • Understanding of DRG reimbursement methodologies

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to work independently and adapt to changing business and process requirements


Preferred Skills

  • Experience with 3M Encoder, Optum, Computer-Assisted Coding (CAC) tools

  • Exposure to Meditech and abstracting software

  • Prior experience working with US healthcare providers
