Role Overview

R1 RCM is seeking Medical Coders and Senior Medical Coders – Outpatient (OP) with strong expertise in CPT, ICD-10-CM, and outpatient coding guidelines. The role focuses on accurate validation and assignment of diagnosis and procedure codes by reviewing outpatient medical records in compliance with regulatory, payer, and organizational standards.

This position is ideal for certified outpatient coding professionals looking to advance their careers within a global healthcare services organization.


Key Responsibilities

  • Review outpatient medical records and assign accurate ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes and CPT/HCPCS procedure codes.

  • Ensure correct code selection, sequencing, and compliance with payer, government, and insurance regulations.

  • Identify documentation gaps and follow up with providers for clarification when required.

  • Collaborate with clinical staff to improve documentation accuracy and coding quality.

  • Analyze complex or unusual cases and research coding guidance as needed.

  • Review daily patient charts and encounter notes for completeness and coding accuracy.

  • Ensure all assigned codes are current, valid, and compliant with annual coding updates.

  • Maintain productivity, accuracy, and quality benchmarks as defined by the organization.


Required Skills & Competencies

  • Strong proficiency in CPT, ICD-10-CM, and outpatient coding methodologies.

  • In-depth understanding of outpatient workflows, payer rules, and reimbursement principles.

  • Excellent knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities for complex coding scenarios.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills for provider and stakeholder interaction.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Flexibility to work from office or home based on business requirements.


Qualifications & Experience

  • Education: Any graduate degree.

  • Experience Required:

    • 3 to 7 years of hands-on experience in outpatient medical coding.

  • Certification (Mandatory):

    • Active certification from AAPC or AHIMA, including CPC, CPC-A, CIC, CCS, or COC, verified at the time of joining.
