Job Summary

Merck & Co. is seeking an accomplished Senior Principal Scientist in Translational Medicine – Immunology to lead innovative early-stage clinical development and biomarker strategies. This leadership role is ideal for an experienced MD or MD/PhD with a strong background in immunology, especially in dermatology, rheumatology, or gastroenterology. Join Merck’s Translational Medicine team and help shape the future of immune-based therapies from discovery through Phase II clinical proof-of-concept.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead early-stage clinical development and translational medicine strategy for immunology programs

  • Design and execute early clinical development plans, including biomarker strategy

  • Guide first-in-human, Phase 1a/b and pharmacology studies from preclinical to post-marketing phases

  • Contribute clinical expertise to target validation, including biomarker and imaging platform development

  • Oversee execution of Phase I trials in collaboration with cross-functional study teams

  • Provide expert input for regulatory submissions, marketing applications, and registration documents

  • Represent Translational Medicine in immunology-related business development assessments

  • Collaborate with global R&D teams across discovery, clinical, biomarker, and regulatory functions


Required Skills & Qualifications

  • MD or MD/PhD with 5+ years of pharma industry experience in clinical research

  • Proven expertise in immunology, preferably in dermatology, rheumatology, or gastroenterology

  • Track record of scientific achievement and scholarship

  • Experience in both patient care and clinical research

  • Strong leadership, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills

  • Board Certification or Eligibility preferred


Preferred Skills

  • Hands-on experience with biomarker platforms, clinical imaging, or pharmacology tools

  • Familiarity with early clinical development strategy, IND submissions, and global regulatory expectations

  • Strong strategic thinking and innovative problem-solving in immunology drug development
