Position Summary

The Senior Project Manager is responsible for leading complex R&D and product development projects, ensuring alignment with portfolio objectives, managing timelines and budgets, mitigating risks, and driving cross-functional collaboration. The role serves as a project champion, facilitating governance, stakeholder engagement, and successful project execution across multiple sites within a matrix organization.


Key Responsibilities

Project Strategy & Leadership

  • Define and execute project strategies aligned with portfolio goals and business objectives.

  • Serve as the project champion and ensure delivery of key project milestones.

  • Drive project advancement through effective planning, governance, and stakeholder engagement.

  • Contribute to organizational initiatives as a representative of Project Management and Global Project & Program Management.

Project Planning & Execution

  • Establish project plans, baselines, assumptions, and execution strategies.

  • Develop, maintain, and challenge project schedules with cross-functional teams.

  • Manage timelines using critical path analysis and scenario planning.

  • Monitor project progress through milestone tracking, quality gates, and stage-gate processes.

  • Evaluate project impacts and recommend corrective actions when necessary.

Risk Management

  • Identify project risks, constraints, and dependencies.

  • Develop mitigation and contingency plans.

  • Conduct scenario analyses to evaluate impacts on timelines, budgets, and deliverables.

  • Escalate critical issues and drive timely resolution.

Stakeholder Management

  • Build strong relationships with Product Development Leadership, pipeline managers, and key stakeholders.

  • Anticipate stakeholder needs and facilitate alignment across functions.

  • Ensure effective communication and decision-making through established governance structures.

  • Present project status updates to leadership and governance committees.

Portfolio & Governance Support

  • Leverage governance processes to accelerate project progression.

  • Identify trends across projects and contribute to portfolio strategy discussions.

  • Align project activities with broader organizational priorities.

  • Share lessons learned and best practices with peers and project management trainees.

Timeline Management

  • Develop and maintain project timelines throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Use project schedules as accountability tools to drive execution.

  • Monitor short-, medium-, and long-term project milestones.

  • Proactively address delays and escalate risks impacting delivery timelines.

Budget & Financial Management

  • Establish and manage project budgets, including direct and indirect costs.

  • Identify budget risks and optimization opportunities.

  • Support resource allocation and funding decisions.

  • Evaluate financial impacts during scenario planning.

  • Report project financials according to Sandoz budgeting and reporting cycles.

Team Leadership & Collaboration

  • Lead cross-functional and multi-site project teams within a matrix organization.

  • Facilitate routine and ad hoc project meetings.

  • Ensure proper documentation of agendas, action items, and meeting minutes.

  • Provide guidance and structured problem-solving approaches to project teams.

  • Resolve conflicts proactively and foster team collaboration.

Project Reporting & Documentation

  • Maintain project documentation and records within relevant databases.

  • Report project status, risks, and performance metrics through governance channels.

  • Ensure data integrity and compliance with organizational standards.


Minimum Requirements

Education

  • Scientific degree required, preferably in:

    • Pharmacy

    • Chemistry

    • Biochemistry

    • Related Life Sciences discipline

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent certification preferred.

Language Requirements

  • Fluent in English.

Experience

  • 5–8 years of experience in Product Development and/or R&D.

  • 10–12 years of Project Management experience.

  • Proven experience leading R&D and pharmaceutical development projects.

  • Experience managing projects in a matrixed organizational environment.

  • Experience mentoring project managers and leading cross-functional teams.
