Role Overview

The Specialty Pharmacist Navigator acts as a key liaison between physician practices and specialty pharmacy services. The role focuses on improving patient access to specialty medications, managing prescription workflows, and supporting clinical and financial processes related to therapy initiation and continuation.

You will work closely with healthcare providers, pharmacy teams, and patients to ensure timely access to specialty pharmaceuticals and optimal patient outcomes.


Key Responsibilities

1. Physician & Practice Engagement

  • Build and maintain relationships with specialty physician practices

  • Identify high-value opportunities for specialty prescription (Rx) partnerships

  • Schedule and conduct meetings with key stakeholders and decision-makers

  • Demonstrate the value of ambulatory/specialty pharmacy collaboration

2. Prescription & Pharmacy Operations

  • Ensure prescriptions are routed correctly to ambulatory/specialty pharmacy

  • Create and maintain patient profiles including insurance and clinical data

  • Process prescriptions, insurance adjudication, and product sourcing

  • Handle limited distribution drugs and out-of-network prescriptions

3. Prior Authorization & Insurance Management

  • Prepare and submit prior authorization (PA) requests

  • Manage insurance denials and appeals

  • Coordinate with payors and support reimbursement processes

4. Patient Access & Financial Support

  • Act as a financial advocate for patients

  • Identify and utilize assistance programs (charities, state programs, manufacturer support)

  • Ensure patients receive timely access to prescribed therapies

5. Patient Coordination & Follow-Up

  • Coordinate medication pickup or courier delivery

  • Monitor patient adherence and refill schedules

  • Follow up on adverse drug reactions (ADR) and clinical queries

  • Maintain communication with physician offices and document in EMR systems

6. Stakeholder Communication & Reporting

  • Maintain ongoing relationships with physician offices through regular visits

  • Provide updates and documentation within EMR systems

  • Support financial reporting and data collection for clients

7. Leadership & Cross-Functional Support

  • Cross-train in ambulatory pharmacy operations

  • Support staffing needs including weekends/holidays if required

  • Mentor, coach, and develop junior associates

  • Assist in onboarding and professional development of new employees


Required Qualifications

  • Current unrestricted Pharmacist license in the relevant state

  • PharmD degree strongly preferred

  • Minimum 5+ years of experience in:

    • Community pharmacy, retail pharmacy, ambulatory care, or health-system pharmacy

  • Prior experience in specialty pharmacy or prior authorization handling highly preferred


Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • Experience with pharmacy dispensing systems

  • Familiarity with insurance adjudication processes

  • Ability to work with clinical data, lab values, and EMR documentation
