Role Summary

The Associate Director, BU Operations Management is responsible for leading and managing operational activities across a designated business unit. The role ensures effective delivery of clinical programs and portfolios through strong project management governance, resource planning, process optimization, and operational excellence.

This position supports strategic planning, business growth initiatives, and continuous improvement efforts while ensuring compliance with regulatory and organizational standards.


Key Responsibilities

1. Operational Leadership & Program Management

  • Oversee delivery of operational activities across clinical study portfolios.

  • Manage coordination of:

    • Single studies

    • Multi-protocol programs

    • Global clinical projects

  • Ensure alignment with:

    • Client requirements

    • Therapeutic area needs

    • Business objectives


2. Project Management Systems & Process Implementation

  • Implement global project management systems and frameworks.

  • Enhance efficiency through standardized processes.

  • Contribute to development and refinement of:

    • SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures)

    • Work Instructions (WIs)

  • Apply process modeling techniques for operational improvement.


3. Resource & Capacity Management

  • Plan and optimize resource allocation across projects.

  • Review staff utilization and capacity planning.

  • Support workforce efficiency and operational scalability.


4. Performance Improvement & Continuous Improvement

  • Identify best practices and process optimization opportunities.

  • Drive operational excellence initiatives.

  • Support innovation in project management methodologies.

  • Contribute to organizational transformation efforts.


5. Risk Management & Contingency Planning

  • Assist in developing:

    • Risk mitigation strategies

    • Contingency plans

  • Ensure continuity and success of clinical operations programs.


6. Project Oversight & Governance

  • Provide oversight of project/program execution.

  • Ensure compliance with:

    • Regulatory requirements (FDA, global standards)

    • Clinical trial protocols

  • Participate in:

    • Project review processes

    • Portfolio governance activities


7. Stakeholder Management & Advisory Role

  • Act as advisor to:

    • Project Sponsors

    • Innovation Managers

    • Project teams

  • Provide guidance on best practices in project management.

  • Serve as escalation point for operational queries.


8. Knowledge Sharing & Change Management

  • Share lessons learned across programs.

  • Build relationships across global stakeholders.

  • Support change management initiatives.

  • Promote adoption of best practices across the organization.


9. Business Development Support (as needed)

  • Contribute to proposal development.

  • Support operational planning for bids and new opportunities.

  • Provide therapeutic or project-level input for business growth.


Required Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) in:

    • Life Sciences

    • Nursing

    • Or equivalent education + experience


Experience

  • Extensive progressive experience in:

    • Clinical research

    • Pharmaceutical industry

    • Biotechnology industry

  • Strong background in:

    • Project management

    • Clinical operations leadership

    • Portfolio/program oversight


Technical & Functional Skills

  • Strong knowledge of:

    • FDA regulations

    • Drug development lifecycle

    • Clinical project management methodologies

  • Proficiency in:

    • Microsoft Office Suite

    • Microsoft Project


Leadership & Behavioral Skills

  • Strong team management and leadership capability

  • Ability to:

    • Plan and prioritize effectively
