Job Purpose

The Coder applies coding expertise to conduct invoice reviews and provide professional advice to billing staff, ensuring compliance, accuracy, and efficiency in claims processing.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conduct audits and coding reviews to ensure accuracy and precision (including co-source partners).

  • Assign and sequence CPT and ICD-10 codes for services rendered, as required.

  • Collaborate with billing staff and work queues (WQs) to ensure proper claim payments.

  • Ensure compliance with Medicare policies, coding initiatives, and guidelines.

  • Work independently from assigned work queues.

  • Maintain confidentiality at all times and uphold professional conduct.

  • Use, protect, and disclose Protected Health Information (PHI) only per HIPAA standards.

  • Follow Information Security and HIPAA policies consistently.

  • Limit PHI viewing to the minimum necessary for assigned duties.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.


Qualifications

  • Certification: CPC (AAPC) or CCS (AHIMA).

  • Education: High school graduate or equivalent.

  • Experience:

    • Minimum 2 years of coding experience in relevant specialty (IP DRG, OP, Denials, SDS, etc.).

    • Surgical coding experience preferred.

  • Technical Skills:

    • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel.

    • Ability to use job-related software effectively.

  • Soft Skills:

    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal).

    • Problem-solving and analytical ability with sound judgment.

    • High integrity, dependability, and results orientation.

    • Professional, gracious, and welcoming demeanor for customer service interactions.


Working Conditions

Physical Demands:

  • Occasionally move around the work area.

  • Sit, perform manual tasks, operate tools and office equipment (computer, peripherals, telephones).

  • Extend arms, kneel, talk, and hear as required.

Mental Demands:

  • Ability to follow directions, collaborate with others, and manage stress effectively.

Work Environment:

  • Noise level is usually minimal.
