Role Summary:

The Director in the Materials Science group at Pfizer will lead a team of scientists responsible for evaluating the chemical and physical properties of Pfizer’s newest small-molecule drug candidates. The role will oversee their suitability for clinical studies and commercialization. The Director will leverage expertise in solid-state chemistry, particle science, and computational chemistry while fostering the professional growth of early-career scientists. A key aspect of the role is to improve scientific and business processes, making contributions to the advancement of drug product design and development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Technical Expertise:

    • Lead a team of 6-12 scientists, enhancing technical skills, scientific knowledge, and fostering growth in colleagues.
    • Focus on solid-state chemistry, pre-formulation, particle science, and computational chemistry.
    • Act as a subject matter expert to guide scientific initiatives and external collaborations.
  • Strategic Direction & Problem Solving:

    • Provide leadership and technical expertise to advance scientific initiatives related to small molecule drug development.
    • Solve difficult technical challenges related to drug formulation and development.
    • Contribute to the digital/computational solutions that accelerate portfolio advancement.
  • Team Mentorship & Development:

    • Mentor and coach early and mid-career scientists, building a collaborative and high-performing team.
    • Foster a passion for leadership and guide colleagues toward meaningful outcomes and business impact.
  • Collaboration & Influence:

    • Work effectively in a cross-disciplinary project environment, collaborating globally with diverse teams.
    • Influence and inspire teams, contribute to scientific discussions, and develop external partnerships.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Education:

    • Ph.D. in Pharmaceutics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline with 10+ years of relevant experience in drug substance/product development. Alternatively, a BS/MS with a minimum of 15 years of relevant pharmaceutical industry experience.
  • Experience:

    • Extensive experience in cross-disciplinary project teams, ideally with a track record in advancing scientific initiatives.
    • Proven authority in solid-state chemistry, form control, and particle science.
    • Demonstrated ability to influence teams and mentor scientists.
  • Skills:

    • Strong organizational, verbal, and written communication skills.
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
    • Knowledge of digital/computational solutions for drug development.

  • Occasional travel for meetings, conferences, and project support.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Salary: $161,600 to $269,400 annually.
  • Bonus: Eligible for a 20% performance-based bonus.
