Job Overview

athenahealth is looking for an experienced Medical Coding Associate to support high-quality, compliant, and efficient revenue cycle operations. This role requires strong multi-specialty coding expertise, deep knowledge of healthcare RCM, and the ability to perform root cause analysis to improve operational workflows. The position plays a critical role in ensuring accurate medical coding, process optimization, and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

Medical Coding & Operational Execution (60%)

  • Perform accurate medical coding of diagnoses and procedures using ICD and CPT guidelines

  • Ensure correct code sequencing in compliance with government, payer, and insurance regulations

  • Review patient charts and clinical documentation for completeness, accuracy, and clarity

  • Investigate and resolve complex or unusual coding scenarios through research and analysis

  • Ensure all coding references and code sets remain current and compliant

  • Monitor client-interaction processes and resolve documentation gaps or inconsistencies

  • Conduct root cause analysis by collaborating with vendors, payers, and internal athenahealth teams

  • Analyze daily operational reports and provide actionable insights on volume trends and variances

  • Advocate for product and process improvements using data-driven analysis

  • Work closely with external organizations to resolve outstanding operational and process issues

Process Improvement & Trend Analysis (30%)

  • Identify, track, and quantify work and productivity trends

  • Recommend process enhancements to enable a more efficient, “touchless” revenue cycle

  • Drive effective coordination with BPO partners and internal departments

  • Collaborate across teams to prioritize and implement process improvements based on business impact

Special Projects & Stakeholder Management (10%)

  • Take full ownership of assigned special projects

  • Partner with internal and client-facing teams to resolve claim-related issues impacting specific clients or business lines

  • Communicate project status, timelines, and resolutions clearly to stakeholders

  • Serve as a subject matter expert for coding, RCM, and operational best practices


Education & Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification

  • 5–7 years of experience in a fast-paced healthcare environment

  • Mandatory experience in Healthcare Revenue Cycle Management (RCM)

  • Strong exposure to multi-specialty medical coding, preferably including surgery


Certifications & Skills

  • CPC, CCS, or equivalent medical coding certification

  • Surgery coding experience preferred

  • CIC certification or inpatient coding knowledge/experience mandatory

  • Strong understanding of healthcare RCM processes and workflows

  • Excellent analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills

  • Proven ability to perform detailed root cause analysis and drive corrective actions
