Position Overview

ICON is seeking a medically qualified professional for the role of Medical Data Review Physician. The position is responsible for coordinating and conducting medical data review activities across assigned clinical projects.

The Medical Data Review Physician will review clinical data to ensure it is medically plausible, consistent, accurate, complete, and aligned with protocol requirements. The role also involves reviewing medical coding, managing medical queries, identifying potential protocol deviations, and collaborating with Medical Directors, clients, Project Management, and other cross-functional teams.

Key Responsibilities

Medical Data Review

  • Perform medical data review activities across assigned clinical trials.

  • Conduct reviews in accordance with project plans, study protocols, scope of work, and applicable SOPs.

  • Apply medical judgment to assess the plausibility, consistency, accuracy, and completeness of participant data.

  • Identify missing, unclear, inconsistent, or medically implausible information.

  • Identify potential protocol deviations and escalate issues as appropriate.

  • Perform holistic participant-level and project-level medical data reviews.

  • Conduct aggregate data reviews to identify trends, medical inconsistencies, and emerging safety or data quality risks.

Medical Data Review Planning and Setup

  • Provide medical leadership and support for planning, setup, and management of medical data review activities.

  • Provide guidance for establishing medical data review processes.

  • Support the review and setup of eCRF forms, edit checks, and CRF guidelines in collaboration with the Medical Director.

  • Ensure medical data review activities are aligned with project requirements and established review plans.

Medical Queries and Issue Resolution

  • Oversee and manage medical queries through resolution.

  • Work collaboratively with Medical Directors, clients, and cross-functional teams to resolve data-related medical issues.

  • Ensure queries are appropriately raised, tracked, followed up, and resolved within required timelines.

  • Apply medical expertise and critical thinking when evaluating responses and determining whether additional clarification is required.

Medical Coding Review

  • Perform medical review of coded terms.

  • Assess coded terms for consistency, medical plausibility, and completeness.

  • Identify coding discrepancies or issues requiring clarification or correction.

  • Ensure medical coding is aligned with study requirements and data review standards.

Reporting and Documentation

  • Prepare regular medical data review reports for Medical Director approval.

  • Maintain accurate documentation of medical data review activities and findings.

  • Support documentation management activities, including:

    • Accuracy checks

    • Tracking

    • Filing

    • Document maintenance

    • Audit preparation

  • Participate in audits and provide appropriate responses to audit findings.

  • Ensure documentation is maintained in accordance with applicable procedures and quality requirements.

Project and Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Participate in internal and client meetings related to medical data review.

  • Discuss data review status, timelines, findings, and issue resolution with relevant stakeholders.

  • Collaborate closely with Medical Directors and other medical review professionals.

  • Work with Project Management and cross-functional teams to ensure high-quality medical data review outcomes.

  • Provide appropriate updates and escalate significant issues when required.

Financial and Operational Responsibilities

  • Support and oversee financial aspects of medical data review activities.

  • Work with the Medical Director and MDR Clinician to monitor medical data review-related activities and resources.

  • Ensure assigned activities are delivered according to agreed project timelines and requirements.

Required Professional Profile

  • Medically qualified professional with relevant clinical or medical education.

  • Strong medical knowledge and clinical judgment.

  • Experience in clinical research and medical data review is highly relevant.

  • Understanding of clinical trial protocols and medical data review processes.

  • Ability to interpret and assess complex clinical data.

  • Strong understanding of medical terminology and clinical concepts.

  • Ability to identify medically implausible, inconsistent, incomplete, or missing data.

  • Strong critical thinking and analytical skills.

  • Ability to work effectively with Medical Directors, clients, Project Management, and global cross-functional teams.
