Role Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Medical Coding Associate with strong multi-specialty coding expertise to ensure accurate and compliant assignment of ICD and CPT codes. This role combines hands-on coding responsibilities, operational analysis, and process improvement, contributing to an efficient revenue cycle management (RCM) environment. The ideal candidate will have 5–7 years of experience in healthcare RCM and demonstrate expertise in root-cause analysis, surgical coding, and inpatient/outpatient coding standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Medical Coding (60%)

  • Validate coding accuracy, sequence codes correctly, and ensure compliance with government and insurance regulations.

  • Review patient charts and documentation for completeness; follow up on unclear or insufficient documentation.

  • Handle complex and unusual coding cases, performing research as needed.

  • Maintain up-to-date coding knowledge and ensure all codes remain active.

Operational Analysis & Process Improvement (30%)

  • Analyze daily operational reports to identify trends, spikes, or dips in volume.

  • Perform root-cause analysis of coding and claim issues, collaborating with vendors, payers, and internal teams.

  • Propose and implement process improvements to enhance workflow efficiency and support a “touchless” revenue cycle.

  • Coordinate effectively with BPO teams and cross-functional divisions to drive results.

Special Projects & Stakeholder Management (10%)

  • Take ownership of special projects impacting individual clients or business units.

  • Communicate project status, resolutions, and insights to stakeholders, ensuring deadlines and quality standards are met.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert for internal teams on coding and process-related queries.

Required Qualifications & Skills:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.

  • Experience: 5–7 years in a fast-paced healthcare RCM environment.

  • Active medical coding certification: CPC, CCS, or equivalent.

  • Multi-specialty coding knowledge, including surgical and inpatient coding (CIC preferred).

  • Strong understanding of ICD, CPT, and RCM processes.

  • Proficient in root-cause analysis, problem-solving, and operational reporting.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and collaborate across multiple teams.

Why Athenahealth:
