Microbiologist II – Minnetonka, MN

Role Overview:
The Microbiologist II will support the manufacturing and quality processes of medical devices by applying microbiological concepts to ensure product safety and regulatory compliance. This role focuses on process monitoring, sterilization validation, laboratory methods, and environmental quality control. The position is primarily office-based and requires occasional travel.

Key Responsibilities:

Facility & Production Microbiological Support

  • Provide microbiological support for environmental monitoring (EM), biological safety cabinets (BSC), DI systems, and compressed air testing.

  • Review routine microbiological test results and investigate out-of-specification findings.

  • Develop and execute qualifications for controlled access environments, deionized water, compressed air systems, and sterilization processes.

  • Assess manufacturing process changes for potential microbial impact.

  • Complete environmental disturbance and annual controlled access environment reports.

Technical Sterilization & Laboratory Methods Support

  • Analyze sterilization processes and contribute to product release decisions.

  • Write and execute protocols and reports for sterilization and microbiological test method validations.

  • Conduct new product assessments for sterilization adoption or validation.

  • Develop and implement microbiological laboratory test methods and provide training to technicians.

  • Perform Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL) sampling and establish microbiological specifications for incoming components.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Ensure proper documentation flow and linkage for microbiologically related records.

  • Maintain current knowledge of applicable regulatory standards and apply them to validations and testing methods.

  • Write protocols, reports, and validation documentation for new technologies, equipment, and methods.

Technical Training & Support

  • Train laboratory technicians on new equipment, test methods, and sterilization validation processes.

  • Support department projects and initiatives, contributing to the overall Quality Management System (QMS) and Environmental Management System (EMS).

  • Comply with FDA regulations, internal policies, and company procedures.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Education:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology or related science (±16 years) OR equivalent combination of education and experience.

    • Master’s degree (±18 years) preferred.

  • Experience:

    • Minimum 2 years with Master’s degree, or 5 years with Bachelor’s degree, in medical device, pharmaceutical, or related industry, with hands-on experience in microbiology, sterilization, and relevant laboratory techniques.

    • Demonstrated troubleshooting skills for out-of-specification situations.

    • Experience in enterprise-level or cross-division environments preferred.

    • Ability to work independently and in a team in fast-paced, matrixed, and geographically diverse environments.

  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and meet deadlines with attention to detail.
