Role Summary:

Pfizer’s Oncology Research Unit (ORU) in La Jolla, California, is seeking a Senior Principal Scientist (PhD) to join the Post-CAN Research group focused on translating basic discoveries in cancer cell biology into novel therapeutics. The ideal candidate will lead preclinical research with a motivated team of scientists to advance clinical and pre-clinical drug programs in oncology. The candidate will focus on translational research in oncology cell signaling and cell cycle assets, using state-of-the-art approaches to understand mechanisms of action and resistance. A strong scientific leadership track record, along with publications in scientific journals, is essential for this role.

Role Responsibilities:

Develop innovative strategies for understanding the role of cell signaling and/or cell cycle targets in cancer progression, drug resistance, and immune modulation.
Lead preclinical research for oncology assets to advance mechanism-of-action studies, develop patient responder hypotheses, elucidate mechanisms of resistance, and identify rational drug combinations.
Provide scientific leadership as the biology lead for post-candidate programs within Global Product Teams to support clinical development.
Collaborate with discovery biology, computational biology, pharmacology, drug pharmacokinetics, and drug safety teams to design experiments and interpret data for advancing pipeline projects.
Work closely with translational oncology to integrate preclinical and clinical datasets and support reverse translation efforts.
Contribute to regulatory strategies and author key submission documents (IND, IB, etc.) to support candidate development.
Stay updated with new literature to progress preclinical research and understanding of mechanisms of action.
Present findings at research meetings and share insights across broader research forums.
Foster a culture of scientific excellence, learning, and continuous improvement within the team.

Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications:

PhD or MD/PhD in Molecular or Cellular Biology, Genetics, Pharmacology, or a comparable biological science with 7+ years of postdoctoral experience in a pharmaceutical/biotech or academic environment. Industry experience is preferred.
Expertise in cell signaling and/or cell cycle biology as demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications.
Proven track record in oncology translational research and/or drug discovery in the fields of cell cycle/cell signaling pathways.
Ability to lead multiple biology research activities and collaborate effectively across teams.
Demonstrated leadership skills, including influencing peers and mentoring colleagues to achieve impactful outcomes.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in leading preclinical translational oncology research and working with cross-functional clinical development teams.
Knowledge of cancer biology areas such as oncogenic signaling, DNA repair, cancer epigenetics, and ADC biology.
Experience supporting regulatory submissions and authoring IND study reports.
Managerial experience in an industry setting.

Compensation:

The annual base salary for this position ranges from $117,300.00 to $195,500.00, with eligibility for Pfizer’s Global Performance Plan, including a 17.5% bonus target and participation in share-based long-term incentive programs.
