About the Role

UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital is seeking a Clinical Pharmacist to oversee the Investigational Drug Services (IDS) program. This position supports clinical trials, IDS pharmacy operations, and interdisciplinary research across the medical center. Research may include studies sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh, Magee-Womens Hospital Research Institute, and the Departments of Obstetrics, Anesthesia, and Maternal Fetal Medicine.

The Clinical Pharmacist ensures the safe, effective, and efficient provision of comprehensive medication management for specialized patient populations, integrating clinical pharmacy services with patient-centered care. This role reports to the Clinical Manager and actively participates in pharmacy operations, clinical research, and interdisciplinary collaboration.


Key Responsibilities

Investigational Drug Services (IDS) Management:

  • Collaborate with investigators, research coordinators, and pharmacy staff to manage IDS programs.

  • Review research protocols for feasibility and compliance with pharmacy operations and regulations.

  • Develop study-specific SOPs and train pharmacy, nursing, and care staff.

  • Maintain billing, accounts receivable, and cost estimates for clinical trials.

Clinical Pharmacy and Patient Care:

  • Lead patient care initiatives, medication utilization programs, and therapeutic services.

  • Deliver direct patient care, including decentralized pharmacy programs and service-based interventions.

  • Assess high-risk patients, recommend evidence-based medication adjustments, and provide discharge medication reviews.

  • Monitor, detect, and mitigate drug-related problems including adverse events, interactions, dosing errors, and untreated indications.

Pharmacy Operations and Compliance:

  • Maintain proficiency in hospital systems, dispensing processes, and specialty medication procedures (e.g., chemotherapy, controlled substances).

  • Implement stewardship activities, medication restriction programs, and quality improvement initiatives.

  • Oversee pharmacy technician activities and facilitate operational excellence.

Education and Mentorship:

  • Serve as a preceptor for pharmacy students and residents.

  • Develop training programs and advance pharmacy practice through experiential education.

  • Lead practice advancement projects to improve medication safety, therapeutic outcomes, and operational efficiency.


Required Qualifications

  • Education: Graduate of an ACPE-accredited College of Pharmacy; B.S. in Pharmacy or PharmD preferred.

  • Licensure: Active Pharmacist license in practicing state.

  • Experience:

    • Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency or minimum 3 years of clinical pharmacy experience.

    • Expertise in advanced pharmacy practice, evidence-based medicine, and comprehensive medication management.

  • Certifications (Preferred): BPS Board Certification.

  • Experience with clinical trial protocols, investigational drug accountability, and regulatory documentation is helpful but not mandatory.
